Visiting

Setting out in pouring rain, diversions in Birmingham City Centre, ongoing improvements apparently, coupled with a malfunctioning satnav was not the start envisaged when accepting an invitation to visit a lodge. However the evening turned out quite remarkable and most enjoyable.

The invitation came from the Worshipful Master, W Bro Mike Gold, who in common with our party of three, W Bro George Simpson of Abbot Lichfield Lodge, W Bro Mel Broadhurst of Unity Lodge No 5812 and myself, hold membership of The Fairways Golfers Lodge of MMM No 1938.

Lodge of Israel

Mike’s lodge, The Lodge of Israel No 1474 was founded in 1874 and recently relocated to Severn Street, Birmingham hence our mystery tour in and around the city centre before arriving at the Temple in Severn Street.

The lodge, although small in numbers, is proud of its heritage and works hard to maintain the standard of ritual for which it is apparently renowned. With a candidate for initiation the evening was all set for enjoyment and it did not disappoint.

On arrival at the Temple it was nice to be welcomed by a friendly and well-known face in W Bro Eric Rymer, PGSD, Assistant Provincial Grand Master. The warmth of the welcome from the lodge members was equally enthusiastic.

The ceremony had some interesting differences with the Deacons in particular having increased duties in connection with the ballot for the candidate. I won’t enlarge further in the hope that some of you might consider a visit at some time in the future. You would be guaranteed a warm welcome.

The ceremony over everyone moved to the Aubrey and Betty Lynes suite at Riverbrook Drive Stirchley to enjoy a superb festive board.

It would be nice to hear of visits others have made!
